Explorer Buddy: A wildcard helper plugin for the Windows Explorer. Change file attributes, copy, move, rename and delete files recursively using wildcards

Highlights cont'd:

File attribute handling

Explorer Buddy allows you to manipulate even the file attributes that Explorer does not show you:

  • With Explorer Buddy you can set or reset every single file attribute (with the exception of "Encrypted" and "Compressed", which are mutually exclusive) independently.

  • Imagine a complete backup of your operating system stored on a CD-ROM. If you copy the files in this backup back onto your PC, each and every of the copied files will have the "Read-Only" attribute set. With conventional Explorer methods you would have to click into every single folder, select all the files in there, show their properties, and finally reset the "Read-Only" attribute.

  • You could, of course, try using the command line, but you might encounter something like this:

  • With Explorer Buddy this is all a piece of cake. You can do all the changes you need in one go. Just go into the top folder of the copied tree, wildcard-select all the files, click the attributes you would ike to set or reset, and hit "OK". That's it.

Highlights finished.

These are some of the things you can do with Explorer Buddy, but by far not all of them. And there are more to come.

Explorer Buddy extends the capabilities of the Windows Explorer by adding a context menu to the detail view. The user can select and manipulate files by using wildcard expressions, even recursively into sub- folders. Problems that may arise during lengthy file operations are anticipated and taken care of before operations start. Batch operations run without interruptions by message boxes that the operating system might otherwise pop up. Operations include Wildcard Select for Drag & Drop, Wildcard Rename, Wildcard Move, Wildcard Copy, Wildcard Delete and Wildcard Change File Attributes. Explorer Buddy generates reports with detailed information as to which operations succeeded and which failed. Furthermore, Explorer Buddy adds to additional columns to Windows Explorer's detail view, giving the user the possibility to sort by file extension (like *.exe or *.bak) and to view the short (8.3) names of files.
